Below is more detailed information about the specialty services WAVES provides for veterinarians and how they benefit the care of their patients.  The time shown for appointment duration is the minimum time needed for each service. Service time may vary depending on the difficulty of the case or unexpected findings or complications.

Services are available by referral only. Veterinarians must contact Dr. Zikes directly by phone or email to book an appointment. Pet owners must contact their primary care veterinarian to request an appointment with Dr. Zikes at their veterinarian's hospital.

Internal Medicine Consult

An internal medicine consult includes review of all pertinent medical records, a full physical examination, and interpretation of diagnostic test results available.  Dr. Zikes will communicate direcitly with the requesting/primary care veterinarian.  Client(s) will not be present for consultation, but will be able to discuss in detail with their veterinarian about the findings and recommendations. (1 hour)

Abdominal Ultrasound

An abdominal ultrasound may or may not require sedation, depending on the pet's temperament and comfort. Fine needle aspirates (FNA), biopsies or abdominocentesis (removal of fluid accumulation in the abdomen) are additional services that may be indicated and therefore provided at an additional cost. A written report of findings will be made available within 24 hours of procedure with sample analysis and interpretation to follow.  (1 hour)

Thoracic Ultrasound

Thoracic ultrasound may require light to heavy sedation. Fine needle aspirates (FNA), thoracocentesis (removal of fluid accumulation in the chest cavity), pericardiocentesis (fluid accumulation within the sack around the heart) are additional services that can be added on at an additional cost. A detailed written report will be provided within 24 hours of procedure. (1 hour)

Gastroduodenoscopy

Gastroduodenoscopy (GDE) requires general anesthesia. GDE includes endoscopy of the esophagus, stomach and duodenum. It allows for direct visualization of the mucosa lining the gastrointestinal tract, retrieval of foreign material, feeding tube placement, and more.  Multiple biopsies will be collected for submission for histopathology/culture/other. (1 hour)

Esophagoscopy

Esophagoscopy requires general anesthesia. It may be indicated for foreign body retrieval, evaluation of the esophageal mucosa, esophageal dilation and/or strictures. If indicated, esophageal balloon dilation of strictures may be performed for an additional fee. (30 minutes)

Colonoscopy

Colonoscopy requires general anesthesia. Colon prep (fasting/cleansing) prior to procedure will be performed as directed. Gross evaluation of the colon and rectum and multiple biopsies of entire colon (and distal ileum when accessible) and biopsies of any lesions/masses for your histopathology submission will be performed. (1 hour)

Upper and Lower Endoscopy

Upper and lower endscopy requires general anesthesia and colonoscopy prep. An upper and lower endoscopy is recommended in most cases of suspected gastrointestinal disease for complete evaluation.  An upper and lower endoscopy allows biopsies of both the upper and lower gastrointestinal tract and any incidental masses identified. Biopsies can be submitted for further analysis. (1.5 hours)

Gastric Foreign Body Removal

Gastric foreign body removal requires general anesthesia. It can provide a non-invasive means of removing many upper GI foreign bodies.  The duration of procedure may vary depending on the type and location of foreign body present.  Pet owners and their pets should be prepared for the possibility of surgery if necessary. (1.5 hours or more)

Rhinoscopy

Rhinoscopy requires general anesthesia. A coagulation profile (test to confirm clotting ability) is highly recommended due to the incidence of bleeding during and post procedure. Visual inspection for nasal mites/foreign material/fungal plaques/gross abnormalities will be performed. Biopsies will be collected for histopathology and the nasal cavity will be flushed thoroughly with saline during the procedure. (1 hour)

Bronchoscopy

Bronchoscopy requires general anesthesia. Bronchoscopy allows for the visualization of structural abnormalities, abnormal airway secretions, foreign bodies, and mass lesions including certain tumors. Fluid/brush cytology samples, biopsies and samples for culture can be obtained to submit for further analysis.

(1 hour)

Otoscopy

Otoscopy is performed under heavy sedation or general anesthesia. It provides a more thorough exam of the external and middle ear canals to diagnose and treat abnormalities such as severe infections/impactions, foreign bodies and masses. Biopsy samples for culture/histopath will be collected as necessary. (45 minutes)

Cystoscopy/Vaginoscopy

Cystourethroscopy and vaginoscopy requires a patient to be under general anesthesia. Evaluation of the vaginal vault, urethra, urinary bladder are included. It is a non-invasive way to confirm the presence of ectopic ureters, urinary calculi, tumors, other abnormalities. Tissue samples will be collected as indicated for evaluation/histopathology/culture. (1hour)
